In what ways does Isabel Allende’s novel The House of the Spirits illustrate some of the primary issues, themes, and problems of twentieth century Latin American history, as discussed in Chasteen’s Born in Blood and Fire, Wood & Alexander’s Problems in Modern Latin American History, and in other course materials this semester? Explain how the story of the Trueba family relates to what you have learned about the history of Latin America, and about Chile in particular. This is not a book report. It is a critical analysis essay that evaluates a work of fiction as a historical primary source document. For example, you may choose to explore how the novel illustrates the ways in which gender, and/or race, and/or class, and/or religion have shaped the social, political, and economic history of Latin America, and the history of Chile in particular.
Structural Guidelines:
The introductory paragraph of your essay should include a thesis statement, which is simply a concise statement of your answer to the essay question. You may want to think of the first paragraph as a road map for your readers, since it shows where your argument will go. In the body of your paper, flesh out your thesis: discuss each of your points in paragraphs that begin with topic sentences and support your points with evidence from The House of the Spirits, Born in Blood and Fire, and Problems in Modern Latin American History. Each time you make an assertion, provide specific evidence to support your point, and cite the page numbers of Allende’s book (or Chasteen’s or Wood’s) where you found that evidence. A paper without citations to sources in the body of the essay cannot earn a passing grade. As a general guideline, your paper should provide at least 10 different page number citations from course readings. This does not mean that you necessarily need 10 quotations from the books. Discuss the book primarily in your own words, but when you do quote evidence in its original phrasing, make sure to use quotation marks. Your concluding paragraph should briefly restate your thesis and the main points of your argument in a way that takes into account the fact that your reader has now read your full essay with its supporting evidence.
