Please answer each of the following questions in at least 1-2 sentences each. Your submission should be a number list (1-6) with one entry for each question.
1. Please think back to a time when your first impression of someone was proven wrong. What was that first impression? In which ways was it inaccurate?
2. How do you think your mind categorized that person when you encountered them for the first time (e.g., Black, Rich, Gay, Muslim, Immigrant, Disabled, Attractive, Old, etc.)? How did that categorization influence your first impression?
3. Based on models of categorization and your own experience, how do you think your mind might have arrived at that categorization?
4. How does your mind represent this social category? What propositions come to your mind when you think of it?
5. Do you know that these propositions are true? Is it conceivable that some of these associations could potentially influence how you perceive and interact with members of that social group? If so, what effect could they have?
6. Did this reflection make you aware of any (implicit) associations you would like to examine further, be mindful of, or challenge moving forward? If so, what’s a simple, concrete thing you can do as a first step?
