Write an essay analyzing a theme in any of the stories posted to the module Essay 2 Short Stories
Your essay must quote from at least two different sources: the story itself and a scholarly article on the story. You must use a full-text article on the story available in either of the following databases:
◦ Literary Reference Center
◦ MLA International Bibliography with Full Text
◦ There are example scholarly articles for each story at the bottom of the reading guides. You are welcome to use any of these example articles.
Thesis Statements – The reading guides will have topics for themes at the bottom of the page. Remember that you need to turn the topic into a clear statement on the theme. Answer the question: What does the story say about this topic? What is the main idea that the story is trying to convey about this issue?
• Address the given prompt. Do not write on “The Lottery” or on the story you discussed in Essay 1.

• Write at least 600 words in the essay itself. The minimum word count does not include the works cited page.

• Include at least 5 paragraphs: an introduction, 3+ body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

• In the body paragraphs, include at least two quotes from the story and at least one quote from the scholarly article. This equals a minimum of three quotations in the body paragraphs. Failure to include quotations will result in an automatic F.

• Include in-text citations and a works cited page with entries for all sources. Exclusion of in-text citations and/or a works cited page will result in an automatic F. Refer to the page on Quoting from Primary and Secondary Sources for more specific directions on quoting, citing and creating works cited pages. Please note that you must cite all sources that you use in the essay.

• Use MLA format for the essay itself, the quotations, and the works cited entries.

• The essay must employ edited American English. See the Grammar Review page and the grading chart at the end of your course policy sheet for information on how grammar will be graded in your essay.

AI CANNOT be used.
• You must save your
essay as a Microsoft Word document (file extension .doc or .docx). If you do not have Word on your computer, you may use the free online version available through your My.Hinds account.
