Scenario Summary
You are working with a small group of _______ graders (you identify the grade level and include it with the goal of your lesson plan scriipt). This is a push-in, small group occurring just after a gen ed teacher teaches a brief, directed math or literacy lesson (you decide which). After you identify the grade level and goal/outcome, you will scriipt lesson procedures describing how you will demonstrate and teach your group to use a specific accessibility feature that will help them to overcome a barrier they experience in the gen ed lesson. (Be sure you have access to this feature because part 2 (the next assignment) will require you to create a video demo, using some of your scriipt).
The barrier would connect directly to a typical IEP or 504 plan that identifies an assistive technology.
Scenario Details
Group: Your small group consists of four students: 2 students with NO IEP or 504 plans, and 2 students with IEP or 504 plans.
Gen Ed Teacher’s previous lesson. You decide and include in the template, whether the lesson taught by gen ed teacher was math or literacy. Include the specific topic of the lesson. Examples: Math, subtracting two-digit numbers or Literacy, decoding multisyllabic words. (Choose different topics than the examples here.) The Gen Ed teacher is focusing on the content. You will focus on teaching how to use a tool to learn the content.
Accessibility Feature You Will Teach/Goal for group: The accessibility feature you choose should be one that may appear in an IEP/504 plan as assistive technology. You will design a set of procedures to teach the small group how to use this accessibility feature to support their learning of the gen ed teacher’s content.
Assume that each student in the class has access to a device (tell me what type of device). The feature you choose must be either located on the device already (found typically in device settings) or built into Google Suite (Docs/Slides/Sheets) or Microsoft 365 (Word/PowerPoint/Excel). You may use a feature you described/explored for last week’s posts to the discussion board so long as it is not a separate application or software. It must be readily available, either through settings on a device or built into this set of tools (Word/PowerPoint/Excel or Google Docs/Presentations/Sheets). Please do not design instruction for some add on/extension, or special software your district has made available. The intent here is to teach you to use features that are freely available on different devices and within common suites of tools most school districts make available.
Your lesson procedures scriipt will include what you will say and do and what the students might ask and will do while learning to use this accessibility feature. Your scriipt will demonstrate for students how to use and ask all students in your small group to explore and use this accessibility feature to help them accomplish the work the gen ed teacher assigned just earlier. All good teaching starts with WHY. Students should be told, explicitly, why the tool might help them, when they might use the tool and how to use it.
