The authors of two of our textbooks (Pacey and Bray, co-authors of Technology in World Civilization, and Headrick, author of Power Over Peoples) are meeting for lunch. Maybe there’s something in the water or maybe there’s too much hot sauce in their meals. These learned scholars get into a heated debate about technology, industrialization, and European imperialism in the 19th century. Stuffing a handful of potato chips into his mouth, Headrick declares, “Look, it is a story of technology and European conquest, domination, and control over the rest of the world. Why don’t you two just go read chaps 5&6 of my book?” Do you think that P&B would agree with this opinion (see P&B chaps 7&9). What are the similarities and differences between their views as presented in their books?
