Your goal for this paper is to apply the concepts discussed in this course to the
McCluskey case, in order to try to help explain the factors that
may have been at play. You may focus on any aspect of the case that you feel has relevance to
the concepts in this course, including McCluskey’s childhood, the events of the crime itself, his psychological or mental characteristics, or any other piece of
evidence brought forward during the trial and/or reported by the media. To help explain these
aspects of the case, you may apply any of the concepts discussed in the course that you feel
would have explanatory relevance.
For instance, in the 2nd class of this course, we will learn about Catharsis Theory, which states
that aggression is a drive that, if not periodically released, could build up to the point of
explosion. One possibility, then, is that you could use Catharsis Theory to suggest that if
McCluskey had been trying very hard to stay under the radar during his escape, he may not have
allowed his aggressive drive to release. Obviously, you’re not going to be able to prove that this
is the case – and that’s okay. Your goal for this paper is simply to use the concepts discussed in
this class to suggest possible explanations for why this terrible crime occurred backed by theory.
Meaning, there is room for conjecture that is based on the research/literature, as long as it is
plausible as well.
The paper should be 10-12 pages, double-spaced, and should be in standard essay form, with an
introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. You can use headings/subheadings if you would
like to help structure your paper.
You may incorporate as many of the concepts from the class as you feel would help explain the
factors in the McCluskey case; however, I would recommend that
you choose between four and six such concepts. Fewer than three is not sufficient, and more than
six may leave you with little room to explain each concept that you introduce. So, as a
recommended plan of action, anticipate applying four to six course concepts in your paper.

CASE: MYLES SANDERSON & DAMIEN SANDERSON
Brothers Myles and Damien Sanderson were spotted “guzzling booze” and “pumping themselves
up” just before the deadly stabbing attacks on James Smith Cree Nation and nearby Weldon, Sask.
in September 2022. Myles Sanderson, 32, killed 11 people (including his brother, Damien) and
injured 17 others in the early morning hours of Sept. 4, 2022. A four-day manhunt for Myles
Sanderson ended with his death after a high-speed chase on a Prairie highway, about 130
kilometres away from the scene of the attacks.
