Part I. Historical Context ( 2 -3 paragraphs):
For this portion of your assignment, you are to summarize the history covered in the unit in AND you are to personally reflect on the literary text’s or primary historical text’s subject matter, outlining how the history you described furthers your understanding of the literary text/primary historical document.
Think: How does knowledge of the historical moment shape the author’s narrative content and your understanding of the piece? ***Note: You can use first person when composing this section—“I think, I believe…”.***

Part II. Close Reading (1 page):
For this final portion of your assignment, you are to demonstrate how the history in question shapes the position put forth in the literary text/primary historical document via a close reading of a passage you choose. A strong passage is 3-5 sentences in length. This section requires that you work toward developing a reading of the literary text in tune with the history under discussion.
