Unit 1: Progression and Development of Alzheimer’s disease and Related disorders
This segment of the course introduces the student to the latest trends concerning
Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, including vocabulary, demographics, disease
states, physiological brain changes, and current treatments and pharmacology.
Unit 2: Behaviors associated with dementia and how to manage and cope with them.
This segment will discuss how behaviors are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and the
other dementias, and how these behaviors relate to the stage of the disease. Topics
include memory loss, irritability, anxiety, depression, confusion, disorientation, mood
swings, personality changes, wandering, pacing, hallucinations, paranoia, clings, sexual
expression, hoarding, hiding, withdrawal and incontinence. Modeling of strategies and
techniques will also be presented to manage and cope with these behaviors.
Unit 3: Communication Skills for Caregivers and Service Providers.
As students learn why and how communication is affected by dementia, they will learn tips
and techniques for avoiding unsuccessful exchanges and facilitating effective
communication. Topics will include listening skills, recognition memory, body language,
validation, empathy, reminiscence, and more. Family member communication will also be
addressed to extend the therapeutic environment for the client, and to reduce stress and
anxiety in the caregiver(s).
Unit 4: Developing Effective and Meaningful Activities for those with Dementia.
Students will explore existing model activity programs for dementia patients and analyze
how these programs meet the specialized needs of someone with dementia. Programs
and activities will be critiqued using the student’s growing knowledge of the disease
process and the resulting behaviors. Applying therapeutic standards and goals, students
will learn how to design successful activities that include the components of music, art,
crafts, physical exercise, adaptive sports, social interaction, sensory awareness,
orientation to current events and news, reminiscence, and the sharing of special meals
and holiday traditions. This module will stress creativity in the design of not only the
activities, but also the objects for manipulation and enjoyment such as puzzles, sensory
tools, reading materials, memory games, etc.
Unit 5: Support Services and Management for Caregivers, Stress and Anxiety
The student will gain knowledge in this part of the course that will enable them to become
information givers with respect to support services and resources available for people who
have dementia and their caregivers. Information regarding support groups for patients as
well as family will be disseminated. In addition, students will learn how to assess stress in
others and demonstrate stress management techniques.
