Please remember to write a thesis (last sentence of the introduction) which makes a claim you will strive to prove/support in the body paragraphs with research-based evidence. The thesis should include your debatable claim as well as the four points you will use to support the claim. Make sure to write your four points in parallel construction.
Students may use information from Papyrus only in the introduction, and the information must be documented.
Each of the body paragraphs needs a topic sentence placed as the first sentence of the paragraph. This sentence should not include borrowed information. The topic sentence should include 1) a transition, 2) the point which will control the paragraph and was identified in the thesis, and 3) contain wording which supports the thesis assertion. Ex of topic sentence: First, education developed Alexander’s military strategy. Then give at least four different examples of what his education included. Document each piece of evidence.
Submit your peer reviewed essays from class in the back of your folder on Thursday.
Put the final essay on top in your folder. Then put two separate and different drafts showing the progression of your writing through this assignment. Then put the outline and the works cited page (prepared in MLA format). The works cited page is a separate page. Remember the entries should be put in alphabetical order. The library instructor told students that the entries would not automatically be put in alphabetical order. The student will need to do that and correct the capitalization in the entries.
Remember the rules for capitalizing titles in MLA format: Capitalize the first letter of the first word of the title and the first letter of the last word of the title. Capitalize the first letter of every word between the first and last words of the title unless they are coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) , articles (a, an, the), or prepositions. I asked that students write their own titles for the essay and to write the title at least three words long so that students can practice MLA capitalization skills.
Remember to write in third person (no I, we, us, our, me, my. you, or your).
Avoid the empty word “thing”.
Avoid the unnecessary modifier “very”
Do not quote in this essay.
Make sure you fold and unfold the third page of the essay and ensure that the text passes the fold line.
There is no maximum page limit.
Remember to put links to your sources on the works cited page if you do not provide copies of them. (In addition to the works cited page you put in the manila folder, send me an electronic version if you include links to your sources on that page instead of providing copies of your sources in your folder.
The paper is due at the beginning of class on Friday. Please read the syllabus regarding requirements to submit papers up to three days late. We discussed this requirement in class again today.
Repeat nothing in the conclusion. Conclude the essay with your thoughts (in third person) after reading so much research on your topic.
I look forward to reading your essays on Friday.
If you still need to pull the correct sources, please do so. Use only academic books found through the catalog and peer reviewed journal articles. Most students will not find a newspaper to use for this paper.
I hold office hours today from 10:15-11:15 and from 12:30-1:30. Come by if I can help by reviewing your essay or answering any questions.
