WRITE IN A NURSING STUDENT POINT OF VIEW
Students will apply and analyze mental health concepts from lectures and/or lab in
relation to their clinical nursing practice. Students will select a clinical situation or
interaction that they encountered during the course and critically reflect,
demonstrating application and integration of course concepts to mental health
nursing practice and their own personal beliefs and values.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for you to:
1) apply and analyze mental health concepts from lecture and/or lab to your clinical nursing practice,
2) critically reflect on a concept(s), mental health nursing practice experience and your own personal beliefs and values.
Format: You will write a short critical reflection paper (5 pages max.) and use relevant evidence
to analyze one clinical experience or situation from your mental health course.
Select a clinical situation or interaction that you encountered during your mental health clinical. Briefly describe the situation or experience and then critically reflect on and analyze it in relation to the course concepts from the lecture and lab.
Refer to the marking rubric for the specific components of the reflection being assessed
I provided an example essay for guidelines. (PLS DO NOT COPY THIS, IT IS AN EXAMPLE FROM LAST YEAR)
The paper should demonstrate:
● Clear, concise, and organized writing style
● Critical reflection and application to mental health course concepts
● Understanding and analysis of the concepts in relation to your particular experience
● Correct APA Formatting for the title page, referencing, in-text citation, any use of headings, 7th edition APA
○ Student APA title page, no abstract required, no appendices required
○ A maximum of 5 pages double spaced NOT including Title page and Reference
page
○ Time or Times New Roman 12 point font throughout
○ Submitted as a Word document
● Integration of a minimum of 3 peer reviewed sources.
You may use a framework or model of reflection to provide structure and guide your
work: Link to Models of Reflection found here: https://latrobe.libguides.com/reflectivepractice/models
● Students may determine how they wish to apply a model into their reflection and their
formatting for where to include the reflective components within their paper.
– Circumstances Surrounding Current Admission (history of presenting concern of patient I am assigned to):
The patient is a 19-year-old male (R1) who lived at home with his mother. His 22-year-old brother (at the time) also resided there as well, but unfortunately, he is now deceased after experiencing sudden medical events. The police were called to the house as the 22-year-old brother was in medical distress and was found to be emaciated. It was ultimately dictated that he suffered a cardiac arrest and was unable to be resuscitated. Due to this call, many issues were unveiled, including the 19-year-old patient, who appeared emaciated, had dirty clothing, matted hair, prominent knee flexion contractures, and was quite childlike for his age (VERY LOW IQ OF 58)
The patient reportedly has not been outside the house in the past two to three years, except for a short series of medical appointments regarding his knees in 2021. Further investigation revealed that pt. has not bathed or showered in the past two years because his mother has been apparently unable to assist him. He also stated that the bathtub was filthy and that he fears bathing alone. Their house was also described as a ‘hoarder’s house.’ His grandparents, who lived in the basement, told PACT they had not seen the patient in the last year, as his mother did not want anyone coming up the stairs.
– PLS ALSO TAKE A LOOK AT THE PATIENT INFORMATION FILE, IT PROVIDES MORE THOROUGH INFORMATION that is required and will help strengthen this essay
Clinical/psych ward interaction with a certain patient I’d like you to write about:
– I’ve had many interactions with him, however, due to his low IQ and childlike mannerisms and dialect, collecting verbal information from him, for example when conducting mental status assessments I would have to reword and alter some of the questions for him to understand, you could correlate how this relates to therapeutic communication
– The patient is also very childish and voices that he has crushes on the female nurses and student nurses, has also had a history of looking inappropriate things up on his phone history, you could correlate this to setting boundaries between patient and nurse, as he is the patient I have been heavily working with and since he is susceptible to having these childish mannerisms and shyness, crushes, etc. towards the women on the unit, as a student nurse learning to set boundaries like this is a fairly new thing, especially setting boundaries with someone who is intellectually disabled it is slightly more difficult.
examples of ways i set boundaries:
– set a time limit to how long we played games together (i played games with him to build rapport and ask him mental health assessment questions)
– redirected conversation when it gets inappropriate ( he is easily redirected)
please let me know if you have any questions, this may be a little bit more difficult to write about, however you can make a few things up if you feel as though it can enhance the information you are writing about, however please be sure to let me know first!!
