You are a DNP administrative leader acutely aware of the increased readmissions rate, at your facility, within 30 days for patients diagnosed with heart failure. You are leading an evidence-based quality improvement (QI) team of multidisciplinary stakeholders. At the last QI team meeting, the cardiology nurse mentioned motivational interviewing as a way to assist patients improve self-care management. You decide to conduct a literature review on motivational interviewing and heart failure self-care management to determine the current state of this practice based on the scientific evidence.
It is recommended a Synthesis Matrix table (presented above) be used to organize notes from the two research articles. It may be helpful to use the Synthesis Matrix to extract and identify the major themes, strengths, weaknesses, and critical gaps of each study and then use the various columns to compare/contrast the two articles. The Synthesis Matrix table is not required, however students are encouraged to try it and/or try composing a similar document organized by concepts in order to assist with synthesizing across studies. Review and synthesize the two studies posted above in a 3-4-page paper (double-spaced; not including title page and references in page count) that includes the following:
Review: In a paraphrased format, appraise and summarize each of the two studies provided above. What are the strengths and limitations of the studies? (Tip: Consider the elements of critical appraisal practiced in previous modules).
Synthesize: What is/are the main point(s)/ takeaway message(s) of the literature based on the two assigned articles? Integrate and synthesize while comparing and contrasting across studies. In their totality, what are these articles saying about the literature on patients diagnosed with heart failure and motivational interviewing? Cite the articles to support your point(s).
