Assignment for Documented Poetry Essay- Length: 700-800 words (typed): Make sure your essay contains a clear thesis sentence, an organization to support that thesis, and grammatically complete, relevant supporting sentences. Support each point with quotations and paraphrases and use parenthesis notes after each one to give credit to your source. Include a works cited page at the end of the essay.
Your Works Cited page should include the primary works which are the poems that you’re writing about, and secondary sources which are written by scholars, critics and biographers about those poems. YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TWO SECONDARY SOURCES IN YOUR WORKS CITED PAGE. Wikipedia and various notes like Cliff Notes, Monarch Notes, enotes and Spark notes are not acceptable sources. Choose peer reviewed sources from our library databases. I recommend Gale Virtual and JSTOR. If you have trouble, consult a librarian.
Before you begin, refer to Part Four, “Writing About Literature” in our text. Follow the MLA guidelines for internal documentation and for the Works Cited page.
Choose one:
1. Choose two of the poems assigned this semester that focus on the same subject, and write a paper that compares and contrasts the poets’ themes, for example, “Dulce et Decorum Est” and “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner,” or “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Those Winter Sundays,” or any other two assigned poems.
2. Write a character analysis of the speaker in one of the poems assigned, for example, the speaker in “Dover Beach” or the speaker in “My Last Duchess.”
The purpose of this assignment is to help you become familiar with incorporating analysis and critical thinking into your writing:
Find and locate ideas, concepts and patterns
Use MLA formatting for the document
Write a research-based critical paper about the assigned readings in clear and grammatically correct prose
A basic holistic rubric:
25% Main Idea: Does the response have a coherent main idea or thesis that answers the prompt?
25% Organization: Does the response follow logical reasoning that is easy to follow?
25% Content: Does the response include examples, evidence and details to support the main idea?
25% Grammar & Mechanics: Does the response have good grammar, spelling, punctuation, and correct MLA citations?
