Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Released in 1960 by Universal studios
Look at the main character, Marion Crane, and think about her predicament. Her job was to take the money to the bank; however, she chooses to keep it with the plan to meet Sam. After speaking with Norman, she realizes that she should not keep it and plans to give it back. If we consider the “good guy/bad guy” convention in relation to her character, would you argue that she is a “good guy” or is she a “bad guy” for what she does? You need to choose one side or the other, but you will need to look at the “gray area” to show how the evidence weighs out on your side. How might gender roles and expectations contribute to her decision? What laws are broken or crossed? Are there any “social contract” issues that should be considered?
