For this essay, you will define a problem within a community and present a researched solution:

to avoid generic problem and solution topics. For example, abortion, gun control, the death penalty, the drinking age, etc. would not be suitable, local topics, and these are cliche topics anyway. Grounding your problem and solution into a local particular community will help you define your audience and write more specific idea development. By picking a community or group you are in, you also unlock the ability to use personal observation and experience as a source of idea development.
• Start by identifying your community. It could be your hometown, a school you attend, a hobby community, an online community, etc. Pretty much any small to medium sized community that you are a member of will work.
• Identify problems in the community by doing some prewriting, listing, clustering, etc., and select one significant problem as your topic.
• Develop a thesis that names the problem and solution while either advocating for multiple solutions or justifying a single solution’s effectiveness.
• Write topic sentences to match your thesis.
• Develop your ideas using good reasoning, personal observation and experience, and cited research from opposing ViewPoints.
