For this assignment, you will be listening to a TED Talk, responding to a scenario, and writing a paper analyzing the leadership and change principles represented.
Part 1: Watch the following video: How Do We Heal Medicine? | Atul Gawande.
Write a paper that addresses the following items:
Give a summary of this TED Talk. What is its key message and explain a specific example of empathy in working with patients discussed in the talk? What are some ways in which a health care leader can show empathy while working with a diverse group of patients?
What leadership styles and principles do you see represented in this TED Talk?
How can thinking of healthcare as a team of specialists, administrators, and clinicians as “pit crews” affect how organizations change and adapt to new challenges?
Write a conclusion that lists your key learnings from this TED Talk.
Part 1 should be a 3-page paper, double-spaced, and two references — use readings from the course and the course text to support your answers.
Part 2: Respond to the following scenario.
Changes in healthcare are impacting all organizations across the industry. Healthcare professionals are expected to use change management, implementation principles, and be able to effectively lead people. You have been selected by the medical center director to build a coalition for the adoption of a new HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance tool, and the integration of the health record from a paper to an electronic format.
Based on the scenario above, address the following:
As a change agent, what will you do to help to successfully implement change and in doing so, how would methodologies be applied to gain buy-in and deal with opponents?
Part 2 should be a 1-page paper, double-spaced, and two references.
