To expand our understanding of workplace genre, please read and annotate the excerpt from chapter 8 (attached) by Bawarshi and Reiff. In the chapter, the writers provide many examples of how genre has been studied in workplace contexts. As you read, comment on ways in which the examples from this new chapter can be used to better understand claims made in the previous one:
[G]enres are dynamic rhetorical forms that develop from responses to recurrent situations and serve to stabilize experience and give it coherence and meaning (79).
[We consider genre as] a dynamic concept marked by stability and change; functioning as a form of situated cognition; tied to ideology, power, and social actions and relations (82).
Genre systems and genre sets organize and distribute cognition, in part, by shaping our sense of timing and opportunity—when, where, why, how, and by whom we expect actions to take place (91).
In addition to your annotations, please write an assignment response in which you discuss an example from chapter 8 and how it relates back to a claim from chapter 6 (bullet points above). Then, turn to the lucid chart from last class and choose a genre for further analysis. Apply the concepts in the writing you did for this assignment so far to an analysis of the genre you chose. For example, if you talked about how “genre systems and genre sets organize and distribute cognition,” then turn to your example and help me understand how that genre organizes and distributes cognition.
