Many individuals in the corrections system have special needs. Some have problems with drug addiction while others have mental illnesses. Various support programs exist, but there are also issues involved with supervision of these individuals.
Consider the first three steps of the Criminal Justice Decision Making Model, and think about the questions associated with each as you prepare to write your paper:
Step One: Define the problem (and the questions that need to be answered). Identify and discuss the various programs that have been created to support individuals in the corrections system.
Step Two: Gather evidence (law, policy, procedure, data) and evaluate for relevancy. Examine the data to determine how many individuals who are imprisoned have a mental illness.
Step Three: Weigh moral considerations and direct/indirect consequences. Were you surprised at the amount of individuals in the corrections system who suffer from some sort of mental illness? Why or why not?
Following Steps Four and Five of the Criminal Justice Decision Making Model, write a three-page essay in which you discuss in detail the supervision of the mentally ill. Why are there so many mentally ill individuals in prison? Do you believe that prisons offer enough programs to help these residents? What else could be done to support this population? While writing, be sure to quote, summarize, and paraphrase correctly, using quotations where necessary. Cite sources in APA format to support your points.
Step Four: Write your proposal, using the above material.
Step Five: Balance your position by addressing alternatives and potential pitfalls.
