The prompt for this essay is to identify a false belief or piece of misinformation that is widely believed by many people, in this case, the 10 percent brain myth, and research it. Make sure to cover the origins of the belief, what groups might be in favor of people holding that belief, and then uncover the truth–is it real or fake or somewhere in between?

Some questions to consider are as follows:

1. Who or where did this information or belief come from? Investigate this person/organization and look for any biases or ulterior motives they might have.

2. Identify what groups of people are most likely to believe in this information (age, political leanings, gender, race, education level, etc)

3. Oftentimes, there is some convenience to misinformation–something about it can be comforting to people or be a simple answer to a very complicated question. Is this the case with your belief?

4. How and when was this information proven false (or perhaps only partially correct)?

5. What impact has this belief or misinformation had on our society? What is the danger in continuing with this misinformation or belief?
