Pick any topic you have an interest in learning more about. You might want to pick something related to your major field of study, but it isn’t required that you do so. The essay should be five pages long.
This is a research paper. You must consult at least seven sources and refer to at least five of them in your essay. If you fail to quote and/or paraphrase at least five sources in your final copy, you will earn no more than 50 points out of the 100 possible on the final essay. Of the five you refer to, one must be a book, one a periodical article, and one an Internet source from quality site. The others may come from any category (as long as they are quality sources).
You will turn in an outline first, then an advanced draft, and then a final paper. On your outline, clearly write out your topic sentences.
Here are some reminders to get you on your way:
1. Begin the essay with an interesting title.
2. Present your topic in a thesis statement.
3. Forecast/preview the support you will use to prove your thesis in the introductory paragraph.
4. Define your issue or topic.
5. Support your position.
8. Check for good paragraph structure and transitions (ties or bridges) between the paragraphs to achieve clarity.
9. Demonstrate a clear understanding of standard English conventions for punctuation, grammar, spelling, verb tense, and sentence structure.
10. Use sources to support your claims.
11. Document your sources in accordance with MLA standards.
12. Do not use encyclopedias, dictionaries, or the book Opposing Viewpoints for your sources.
13. Contact the library for help finding sources if necessary.
14. Do not use “you” or “I” in the paper.
Please no politics, gun and violation.
