Assessment format: A Poster (in PowerPoint format, maximum 3 slides) and a document of notes (in PDF or MS Word format), submitted on blackboard, and live presentation during a seminar.
Word limit or length of presentation: Poster 600 – 700 words; Group presentation for 10- 12 minutes (gauge your Poster length for this time limit); 1500-word notes (excluding references and tables/figure in the word count).
Requirements
Students work in a group and choose a business sector. They then conduct a thorough analysis of data sourced from that sector, presenting an overview of the industry, highlighting its leaders, and detailing the data used for the analysis.
Each group member receives the group mark. This work is assessed and is designed to enhance learning and development, contributing to a deeper understanding for the individual analytical Report (Assessment 2)
Guidelines:
Step 1: Form your group and choose a sector of interest for the group.
Form a Group of 3 – 5 students (maximum of 5 students per group) by self-selection in week 1. Review and familiarise yourself with the data of the markets and sectors. You will source and use selected secondary data from secondary data sources, such as Mintel, Office for National Statistics (UK), European Social Survey, Kaggle Datasets. Discuss and choose a sector of interest for the group’s presentation.
Step 2 Identify players in the sector.
Here we expect basic sector-specific secondary data and KPIs (key performance indicators) to be collected. Discover market shares, the main players, market size, the number of users, monetary value, etc., and provide your rationale for focusing on the selected data.
To find the market size and market shares, you need to think critically and research broadly. Look at MINTEL data for related areas. For example, if you were looking at the furniture sector you would look at DIY, Home furnishing, sofas etc. See the trade association websites as they collect figures and may show them or talk about them.
Step 3 Search Annual Reports, news items and other sources of information
In this step, you organise the identified data sources, formulate your data structure, plan on how to use the structured data to explore problems, issues or questions, and critique on the limitations of the data sources.
Step 4 Examine the top three industry leaders.
Use the organised data to compare the performance of the TOP THREE industry leaders (these are the top THREE performing companies in the sector based on the analysis of the sector-specific data). Endeavour to apply the data analytics methods/approaches to demonstrate companies that are performing below, above or at par with the industry average on the various sector-specific benchmark criteria or KPIs.
Step 5 Prepare a poster detailing your analysis and findings.
Describe in a succinct style the process, analysis and findings from this group work. Use clear presentations of accurate text statements, logically linked headings, clearly structured tables and figures. There should be explicit and coherent flow of information (i.e., what story are you telling?) and standpoints supported by your data analysis.
Contents of the Poster:
· Objectives. State what the work presented in this poster aims to achieve.
· The chosen sector: You can choose from one of the following sectors: Hospitality (including Hotels); Telecommunications; Transport (Including Airlines); Fashion and apparel; Financial services; E-commerce; Technology; Gaming; Sports and fitness; Education; Entertainment; Automotive; Consumer goods.
· Industry overview: market trends, growth potential, competitive landscape, and any relevant industry insights, e.g., size, growth rate, products or services, target market, and current market position of key players, current situation.
· Sector-specific KEY indicators. For example, in the travel and tourism sector, occupancy rate and average length of stay are sector specific indicators.
· Critical analysis of the chosen sector-specific data (including limitations of the data).
· An evaluation of the Performance of the TOP THREE companies in the sector using the sector-specific data sources.
Recommendations for marketing improvement in the low performing companies based on the analysis of the sector-specific data sources
Step 6 Provide a document of group work notes (1,500 words)
State objectives, what data sources have been used, how the data was organised and structured, the process of the analysis, what findings have been gained from the analysis. Your notes should also summaries your group members’ experience, e.g., what you have achieved, any lessons learned, how this group work has prepared you for your individual Report (assessment 2).
LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED
The group presentation assesses the following learning outcomes:
· LO1 Explain the construction and purpose of a selected number of the most important marketing metrics and be familiar with others.
· LO2 Show awareness of the use of bespoke metrics within specific industries and markets.
· LO3: Apply a range of relevant problem-solving methods and techniques to define and investigate problems, patterns and relationships in data sources for marketing, using data in contexts of varying complexity.
