Note: By this time, each student should have reached out to at least one new professional contact. Refer to the Syllabus regarding Project 4 planning.
Before reaching out to a new contact, it was important to research & evaluate the social media presence of organizations & individual professionals in which you’re interested.
Facebook & LinkedIn were two good places to start. Comparing the types of information & the presentation of that information in both social media platforms helps determine the kind of presence each company &/or professional is trying to establish.
Facebook & LinkedIn profiles often have links to company & personal webpages, where further information can be located. Exploring beyond the social media profiles is important for developing a better understanding of the organizations & the professionals who work for them.
Over the course of the class, several factors have contributed to your decision about whom to contact. The following were some factors considered:
Which organization the professional works for
What position the professional holds in the organization
How approachable the professional seems (i.e., profile image, language tone & style, etc.)
Why the professional’s experience connects with your interests & goals
Making an informed & reasonable choice of professional to contact has been important. For example, a department director in a large corporation was more likely to respond to your message than a major company leader like a CFO.
On the other hand, small start-up companies typically invite those interested to contact their leaders directly. Often, these company leaders are the main staff until the start-up grows.
FYI: This discussion serves as an opportunity to ask for & provide feedback on peers’ current progress. If you would like particular input, post questions for your peers to help you.

How did you decide whom to contact for your eNetworking experience? What factors contributed to your decision?
Before reaching out to a specific professional, what did you learn about their organization & where did you find this information?
Likewise, what did you find out about that specific professional via their social media sites?
Discuss the responses you’ve received from the professional(s).
