Your essay should be 4 pages long, using double-spaced, 12 point, “regular” font (Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.).
The essay should consist of two parts. The first should be a general summary of the book. A summary highlights the main arguments of the book, the evidence used by the author, and the conclusions they make from their evidence. It is NOT a chapter-by-chapter breakdown. You should concisely explain Alexander’s argument and detail several pieces of evidence used in the book to support her argument.
The second part should use The New Jim Crow as a starting point to discuss what you believe are potential policies that can be enacted in relation to mass incarceration. You should use some outside sources in this portion of the essay, but it does not need to be extensive. You do not necessarily need to agree with Alexander’s arguments to use it as a starting point for policy discussions.
Citations should be done in Chicago Style format. This means they should be used as a footnote or endnote. Be advised, a footnote or endnote is not the same thing as a footer. If you cite your sources using a footer, they will show up on every page, rather than just the page you are making the citation. It will make your plagiarism score on Canvas very high.
