Photovoice is a qualitative research method that combines photography and storytelling to empower communities and amplify the voices of marginalized individuals. Originally developed in the 1990s by Caroline C. Wang and Mary Ann Burris, photovoice provides people with cameras or other visual tools to document their communities, experiences, and concerns. Participants, often those who are underrepresented or disadvantaged, use photography as a means to capture their lived realities and share their perspectives on various social issues. Photovoice projects aim to promote dialogue, raise awareness, and inspire positive change within communities. It has been used in various contexts, including public health, psychology, social work, community development, education, and research. The method emphasizes the importance of participants’ perspectives and lived experiences, making it a valuable tool for participatory research and community engagement.

For this assignment, you will conduct a mini photovoice project to gain experience of using photos as data to address/highlight an issue. Please choose to do your mini photovoice project on the following:
Capturing an issue that directly impacts your life or those around you that you think needs to be improved (either in your home, community, school, etc.). Please reflect on the following (Your response must be at least 200 words):
Reflect on the potential impact of conducting a Photovoice project in a school, community, or broader society.
Brainstorm and address any ethical considerations researchers can encountered while conducting a Photovoice project; and discuss ways to navigate these ethical issues (e.g. issues of privacy, consent, and representation in photographic storytelling).
