Learning outcomes
This TMA will help you to achieve the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding
understand themes, theoretical frameworks, ideas, methods, and evidence bases relevant to children and young peoples’ wellbeing
appreciate the principles, purposes, responsibilities, values and ethical issues affecting those working with children and young people
Cognitive skills
review your own and alternative standpoints in relation to children and young people
The material you will need for this assignment will be found in Topic 1: Wellbeing and Topic 2: Relationships including the related book chapters.
The first part of the question requires you to show that you have understood some of the debates around what we mean by the wellbeing of children and young people. In this first section you should set out a definition of wellbeing but also show your understanding of some of the issues involved in trying to define what it is. Here you should draw on the preparation work you have already done in Activity 1.17. The different views on measuring wellbeing are also laid out in Topic 1: Wellbeing particularly in the first book chapter and you could also revisit your work in Activity 1.5.
To answer the second part of the question you will need to identify some of the different relationships in children and young people’s lives and the impact that some of these relationships may have on their wellbeing. In Topics 1 and 2 you have looked at such issues as resilience, bullying, managing conflict, family dynamics, siblings, friendships, parental circumstances, and different approaches to parenting, any of which can impact children’s and young people’s wellbeing (see Chapter 2: Relationships). You can also refer to the audio-visual material to support your case – for example, from James’ story. You are not expected to try and cover all aspects of relationships – aim to focus on two examples.
