What are R & A Assignments?
Reflection & Application (R&A) assignments are short written assignments designed to give you the opportunity to reflect on and/or apply specific reading and study strategies covered in the course. R&A Assignments are 20% of your grade in this class. There are four R&A assignments this semester.
DIRECTIONS
For this assignment, you will create a 5-day study plan for the Final Exam for this class. Your study plan should address all the main areas of content that will be covered on the Final Exam – see the Final Exam Study Guide and the Class Schedule in the Syllabus for what to include in your study plan.
Your 5-day study plan should follow the guidelines and examples in Preparing for a Test: The 5-Day Study Plan from Reading Assignment #7 in the Week 9 Module. Your 5-day study plan should divide material to be covered for the Final Exam into four chunks (=groups of material to be covered): A, B, C, and D. You can decide what material each chunk will cover, but you must clearly explain what material each chunk covers. For example, Chunk A = Reading Assignments 1 – 5, Chunk B = Reading Assignments 6 – 10, Chunk C = Target Vocabulary Lists 1 – 10 + Quizzes 1 -10, and so on.
You should indicate whether you will prepare for or review a chunk and how much time you will spend on each chunk on a specific day of your study plan, for example, Day 1: Prepare Chunk A (Reading Assignments 1 – 5): 2 hours. Your study plan should indicate that you will prepare for each chunk (A, B, C, and D) one time and review each chunk at least two times.
Your study plan should include at least three different test preparation strategies and three different test review strategies – see “Examples of Preparation and Review Strategies” in Preparing for a Test: The 5-Day Study Plan. You should indicate specifically what material from the Final Exam each strategy is used for. You should only list preparation strategies (not review strategies) under headings that say “Prepare”, for example, Prepare Chunk A (Reading Assignments 1 – 5): 2 hours. Similarly, you should only list review strategies (not preparation strategies) under headings that say “Review”, for example, Review Chunk A (Reading Assignments 1 – 5): 30 minutes.
Sample Study Plan
Here is an example that shows Day 1 and Day 2 of a sample 5-day study plan for the Final Exam in this class. In this example, Chunk A = Reading Assignments 1 – 5 and Chunk B = Reading Assignments 6 – 10.
Day 1
Prepare Chunk A (Reading Assignments 1 – 5): 2 hoursMake Flashcards to review key terms and concepts in Reading Assignments 1 – 5.
Write a 1-paragraph summary of each reading for Reading Assignments 1 – 5.
Make a list of 20 topics from Reading Assignments 1 – 5 that could be on the Final Exam.
Day 2
Prepare Chunk B (Reading Assignments 6 – 10): 2 hoursMake Flashcards to review key terms and concepts in Reading Assignments 6 – 10.
Write a 1-paragraph summary of each reading for Reading Assignments 6 – 10.
Make a list of 20 topics from Reading Assignments 6 – 10 that could be on the Final Exam.
Review Chunk A (Reading Assignments 1 – 5): 30 minutesUse flashcards I made to review key terms and concepts in Reading Assignments 1 – 5
Outline key points in the 1-paragraph summary I wrote for each reading for Reading Assignments 1 – 5.
Recite from memory my list of 20 topics from Reading Assignments 1 – 5 that could be on the Final Exam.
The format of your 5-day study plan should be similar to the example above (see the Rubric below). Your 5-day study plan should have the headings Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc., specify the type of strategy for each chunk (ex. preparation or review), indicate how much time you will spend on each chunk, and indicate specifically which strategies you are using to prepare for or review each chunk. Like the example above, you should only list preparation strategies under headings that say “Prepare”, and you should only list review strategies under headings that say “Review”. Do not mix preparation and review strategies under the same heading.
