Step 2. You should now have an approved topic consisting of a current debate among credible authorities on an archaeological topic. And you should have identified at least two peer-reviewed articles on the topic, one for each opposing side of the debate.
Your next task is to identify 2-3 lines of evidence that have been cited in the archaeological literature in support of each of the claims to the controversy you are focusing on. Evidence should take the form of archaeological data, not assertions or quotes from experts. If you have followed the directions, the two sides of the debate you have identified should cite evidence that is in opposition, or conflict. In archaeology, this often comes down to dating; for example, one side claims there is Neanderthal art dating to 60,000 BP (your evidence here might include dates from 2-3 sites with Neanderthal art), but the opposing side claims that these dates are in error or unreliable (perhaps because the techniques are imprecise, or this is some possibility of contamination). But it also might involve debate over terms or categories; in this example, the opposing side might also argue that the “art” is not really symbolic, representational art in the same sense we think of it today (perhaps because it lacks sophistication, or may have been made unintentionally).
In this assignment, you will organize this evidence in an outline that can form the basis for the paper you will complete in Step 3. Specifically, in this assignment, you are asked to include the following:
1. A statement about the importance of the debate. What makes it interesting or controversial? Why do experts debate this topic? Why are you interested in this topic? You will later develop this into the Introduction of your paper.
2a. A concise summary of one of the opposing sides.
2b. A list of 2-3 lines of evidence in support of this side; again, evidence should take the form of archaeological data, not assertions or quotes from experts. You will later develop this into 1-3 paragraphs in the Body of your paper.
3a. A concise summary of the other opposing side.
3b. A list of 2-3 lines of evidence in support of this side; again, evidence should take the form of archaeological data, not assertions or quotes from experts. You will later develop this into another 1-3 paragraphs in the Body of your paper.
4. A brief summary statement describing how the debate might be resolved through additional archaeological study and evidence. You will later develop this into the conclusion of your Part 1 paper, and you will expand on this in the Part 2 paper.
