If leadership style can be put along a continuum from the autocratic style on the one end and democratic on the other end, with infinite number of points in between, what do leaders decide about which style of leadership they are supposed to practice?
If you are not already familiar with contingency or situational leadership, please research and understand both theories: Fiedler’s contingency leadership and Hersey-Blanchard’s situational leadership.
Here is your assignment (3-4 pages long):
From your research and experience, evaluate situational and contingency leadership theories. Describe the basic characteristics of both theories and the leaders in place based on each. What is your understanding about how these theories are supposed to work?
From your research and experience also evaluate autocratic and democratic leadership. What are then the relevant conditions that need to be taken into consideration for each style to be effective? Hersey and Blanchard say it is the maturity of the followers or workers. What are your views? Under what conditions would a contingent and situational leader be most effective? In settings at work, volunteer groups, personal associations and other situations, what personal experience have you experienced with leaders under the various styles?
Write a 3-4 page essay addressing the two topics listed above. Provide informed explanations, analyses, and evaluations for your answers. Properly cited sources are required to support your evaluation.
