For this essay, we’re starting with a couple of key questions: should colleges allow students to use generative AI tools? Should students use these tools, even if they’re available? What do university AI policies tell us about the relationships between students, faculty, universities, and the education process itself?
You will be participating in this ongoing conversation about the use of generative AI tools at colleges and universities by identifying some relevant key issues when it comes to using this technology, comparing and contrasting some existing approaches or solutions to this problem, and making your own argument about how you think colleges generally, or Fordham specifically, should handle this new technology.
In the course of your essay, you will need to discuss at least one published opinion on the uses/limitations of AI, and at least two proposed or existing solutions, but in many cases it might be advantageous to incorporate more relevant voices into the conversation. In comparing and contrasting these solutions to how colleges should handle AI, you must use actual solutions that have been proposed by real people or organizations.
You’re free to use any of our assigned readings, but I will also encourage you to do some research of your own to see how other institutions are handling AI. You will need to both quote and paraphrase your sources, citing them correctly. (Please note: sources, plural. The two solutions you discuss cannot come from the same source, even if you can find an article that discusses multiple solutions.) Use proper MLA format for citations, and include a works cited page.
