Preparation:
Choose at least two texts (books or passages) that you believe are at the student’s instructional level
These can be from your classroom or from online resources (Reading A-Z has a variety of passages and recording sheets at multiple levels, and you can sign up for a free demo account)
Print recording forms or type out the text so you can record your observations
Conduct the Assessment:
Sit with the student and complete the running record assessment. Record the student’s correct reading, errors, and behaviors you observe.
You want to be sure to have the student read texts that (at a minimum) show their instructional level. If you find that the student is able to read through the texts independently (95-100% accuracy) or is frustrated (below 90% accuracy), it is important to complete the assessment with other text levels

Note: Students may have multiple instructional levels. Ideally, you would have the student continue reading more challenging texts until a frustration level is found. The highest instructional level before frustration would be where you’d want to focus your instruction.
Analyze the Results:
Based on the data from the assessment (all of the books/passages the student read), consider the student’s strengths and areas of challenge related to literacy. This may include strengths and challenges relating to decoding skills, fluency, and/or comprehension.
Based on this information, identify next steps for instruction. On what does the student need specific, focused instruction, in order to help them continue growing?
Detail your findings and recommendations in a written report.
Your submission should include:
Images of your completed running records
A two-three page written report that details
A descriptive and thorough summary of the data (This is not your interpretation. It is the specifics that the data shows.)
An analysis of the the learner’s strengths and needs, and the evidence that supports this analysis
A minimum of three instructional recommendations based on the analysis. These should be specific and justified, drawing on information from the text and outside sources.
