Review this scenario:
The year is 2045. You are a senator from a small state with a large naval base that is at the heart of the state’s economy. The President has created a defense spending reform package that is designed to construct a smarter and more up-to-date national security budget— an objective that definitely serves the national interest. Part of the reform package is the closing of military bases that no longer serve any vital purpose and redirecting that money into programs that will protect national security. One of the bases that must be closed is the huge naval base in your state. Your constituents are certain to take a short-term economic loss but the nation is better served with this closing. What should you do when called upon to cast a vote on the President’s program?
Post: After reading and analyzing the scenario, and reading Chapter 11, explain how you would vote, while also addressing these prompts. Please number your responses.
How would you vote?
How would you act—as a trustee or a delegate?
What kind of pressure might you get from your constituents?
How might your decision be influenced if the President is of the same political party as you (the focus here is on the political party more than the President)? What if you are of the opposing party?
How would your vote be influenced by your years of service in the Senate, depending on if you were recently elected or a senior Senator?
