Assessment 1: Individual coursework
In their ethnography of a UK newspaper printing factory, Alcadipani et al. (2018) study the forms of dominance and resistance within organizations. They found that the implementation of lean management practices manifests in different forms of domination of the workers, which leads, in turn, to both tangible and subtle forms of resistance.
To understand work-life balance practices in the Canadian information and communication technologies organizations, Hari (2017) combined interviews with their HR managers with analysis of organizational websites. Hari found that such tech companies’ HR managers separate care from the remit of work-life balance issues; thus, reproducing the masculinist assumptions of an ‘ordinary’ ICT worker.
Critically evaluate the methodological and analytical strategies and techniques used by Alcadipani et al. (2018) and Hari (2017).
