The essay you need to comment on:
In the first reading, William James states his opposition towards imperialism. He also goes on to talk about America’s view of itself as superior to other nations. In the second reading, Mary Tape writes a letter to the board of education for denying her daughter entrance to Spring Valley school. It goes on to highlight the segregation in schools of children of Chinese descent.
In the first reading, William James begins by highlighting how different America viewed itself compared to other nations and how America did not carry the burdens that Europe did. He goes on to say that the virtues that America carries themselves so highly with are not subject to geographical divisions. Essentially he is saying that America can be just as bad as other countries and other countries can be just as good and virtuous as America claims to be.
In the second reading, Mary Tape writes a letter to the board of education after they deny her daughter, Mamie Tape, entry to Spring Valley school. Instead of allowing her entry into Spring Valley school, they made a Chinese school for her to attend. Mary Tape’s letter shames the board of education for denying her daughter entry into the school based solely on her Chinese descent. She goes on to describe that her daughter is the exact same as a caucasian child apart from her facial features and that it is very unchristian like to make her daughter go to a school far away from home solely because of her chinese descent. She finalizes her letter with a statement which essentially says that her Chinese descent does not make her any less american.
Both of these readings really bring to light America’s corrupt sense of superiority over other nations. They both emphasize how far America is from the virtues that they so proudly claim to live by. Essentially, the theme of both readings is how America needs to learn they are no better than other nations and that by thinking that they are they are going against all the values and virtues that they hold so dearly.
