Westward Expansion:
Westward Expansion was when the United States expanded its territory from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast. This westward movement was driven by a combination of factors, including economic opportunities, the quest for land, and the belief in manifest destiny—the notion that it was America’s destiny to expand across the continent. The expansion had profound consequences for Native American populations, as they were displaced from their lands, often leading to conflicts and the forced removal along the Trail of Tears. With the passage of the Dawes Act, Indians lost 86 million of the 138 million acres of land in their possession. (The Dawes Act 5:44-5:50) Furthermore, in an attempt to force Indians to assimilate to American culture, they were forcefully removed from their families to attend boarding schools. (American Indian Boarding Schools 7:15-7:30) Westward Expansion had a lasting impact on the nation, as it fueled economic growth, altered the demographic composition of the country, and intensified debates over issues like slavery and the role of the federal government in regulating new territories. It remains a pivotal chapter in American history, shaping the nation’s development and identity. I learned that Westward Expansion was a defining period in American history during the 19th century, characterized by the nation’s westward territorial growth driven by manifest destiny, economic opportunities, and land acquisition. One thing that surprised me was the profound impact it had on Native American populations, who suffered displacement and conflict as a consequence of this expansion.
