Critical Reflections occur when we analyze and challenge the validity of our presuppositions and assess the appropriateness of our knowledge, understanding and beliefs given our present contexts (Mezirow, 1990). In other words, you take a minute, a beat, a day, some time to consider what you’ve read/heard/been exposed to and THEN consider:
What does this new knowledge mean?
How does this new knowledge challenge what I know or believe? Why does this new knowledge challenge what I know or believe?
How do I incorporate what I’ve just read/heard/seen into what I believe? Furthermore, how do I incorporate what I’ve just read/heard/seen into my conversations with others? And even furthermore, how do I incorporate what I’ve just read/heard/seen into my future actions or practices?
If I wasn’t challenged by what I read/heard/saw, why not? Do I already have this knowledge, understanding or belief in practice in my current context?
How do I talk about this new knowledge without “reporting” about it?
Critical Reflection Logistics Rubric:
Was I thorough? Did I write at least 400 words (or other as described), did I use correct APA and did I submit on time? (2 points)
Did I identify and address some of the major arguments/points/principles in the readings? (2 points)
Did I use three articles, or more, and did we include at least 1 direct reference to a key idea per each article (and cite accordingly), and react to this statement or idea? How are my views challenged or supported by these ideas? (2 points)
Did I discuss how this impacts my own work in education? Give examples if possible. (2 points)
Did I pose a clear/non-rhetorical question for future discussion—at any point during my reflection– based on the material? (2 points)
Please do not simply summarize the readings or state: “I agree with the author’s views”….It’s a weak response to any new information and doesn’t indicate any depth of opinion or knowledge.
