Did you vote? It is your right!
As you know, we had a very important election on Nov. 3rd, 2020. Of course, the main event was voting for the president. However, as California residents, you also voted on a number of Propositions, so we will be learning about those in this essay assignment.
There were 12 Propositions, and some of the issues included: Stem Cell Research, Affirmative Action, Voting at Age 17, Rent Control, and other very important issues that affect all of us in California.
The purpose behind this assignment is to help you learn to research political races. I want you to become more knowledgeable about the voting process.
Step 1 Visit California Matters,Links to an external site. and scroll down to the Propositions.
Choose any one Proposition, read about it on the web site, and watch the one minute film.
Step 2 Find 2 Opposing View Point Adds on the Proposition you choose
Research adds on the proposition you choose. Choose one ad that is pro and one that is con to explain your thoughts on the proposition. Please visit the Writing Task: Rhetorical Appeals to complete this portion.
Step 3 Write Your Essay
Write one paragraph for each of the following 4 sections for a total of about 600-800 words.
Paragraph 1: Provide an overview of the Proposition (Do NOT copy and paste from the web site, but explain it in your own words.) Do not include your opinion here.
Paragraph 2: Explain why one would vote “Yes” and why one would vote “No” on the proposition based on the information on Cal Matters and the additional research you completed on the proposition itself. .
Paragraph 3 : Explain the truth behind the misleading ads that are circulating around the proposition. Use both ads as direct evidence to support you claims and explanations.
Paragraph 4: Conclude with an explanation on where you stand on the proposition and explain the final result of the proposition was from the election. This is where you will include your opinion. Please also include what the final result of the proposition was from the election.

Step 4 Register to Vote
