Please choose from one of these two options.
A) In evaluating feminist thought of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, historians have located two broad approaches to women’s issues: “relational” and “individualistic” feminism. (Note: please see discussion, below, for explanation of these terms.) Write an essay that evaluates the assigned course readings (see Blackboard) in light of this distinction. Which arguments tend to be relational, and which are more individualistic in their assessment of women’s roles and aspirations? Which of these positions do you find you most persuasive and why? (To my mind, the relevant texts here include (but are not restricted to) those from the Chartist Women, Mozzoni, Bodichon, and Taylor.)
B) During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, controversies broke out between socialist women and feminists over the issue of protective legislation for women workers. These debates posed broader questions of individualistic versus collective solutions to social problems and women’s exploitation. Write an essay that takes a position for or against protective legislation, based upon the readings posted on Blackboard (Zetkin, Kautsky and Webb) or in your Documentary Reader (Pognon).
