Review Chapter 36 on pgs. 405-409 in the Norton Field Guide regarding the Cause-Effect writing
strategy.
Also note the additional files and/or PowerPoints that have been posted to the D2L course
homepage.
You should read them carefully and integrate the concepts to this essay.
Please refer to the instructions below regarding thesis statement and supporting ideas. You will
need to emphasize a cause OR an effect. Not both – cause or effect – choose 1.
In other words, you will state the major “cause” of the issue in your thesis and then in the body
of the essay you will discuss how the cause leads to 3 effects; please refer to flowchart on the
bottom of pg. 407 in the Norton Field Guide
OR
In your thesis, you will state the major “effect” of the issue and in the body of the essay, you
discuss how the effect resulted from 3 causes; please refer to the flowchart at the top of pg.
408 in the Norton Field Guide
The flow charts on pgs. 407 and 408 in the Norton Field Guide are visualizations of the thesis
statements used for Cause and Effect.
Consider this, the thesis statement answers a question.
What does a gambling addiction do to the addict’s family?
Cause leads to effects
Thesis: A gambling addiction can lead to ……… (list 3 effects)
How can someone become addicted to gambling?
Effect results from causes
Thesis: A gambling addiction can result from ……. (list 3 causes)
