Watch the YouTube video on the same painting, paying close attention to the way the narrator discusses aspects of the painting and what they represent.
Reread Hass’s poem, “The Story About the Body”Links to an external site. and listen to Avril Lavigne’s song “Head Above Water.”Links to an external site.
Consider the questions:
How is the person who has suffered or is suffering from an illness or disease being treated?
What is the person’s specific objection to this treatment?
Then, think about a time in which you or a loved one experienced mistreatment or were unfairly judged because of a medical condition or a perceived disability. If you do not have such an experience on which to draw, imagine that you are either the woman in the poem or the woman in the song, and write a reflection piece from her perspective answering the above questions. Call out at least 3 aspects of the painting, poem, and/or song that support what you write about.
