CASE STUDY “SIMON PETER”
Simon Peter is a 9-year-old boy who attends the ‘helping hands’ Special Ed. school in Jamaica. This school caters to children with social, emotional, and
behavioral difficulties. He has been diagnosed with autism, but he is academically,
capable with an inquisitive mind. He displays strengths in mathematics and science,
and enjoys playing with construction toys. However, on several occasions, the staff
reported that Simon seems to have difficulty regulating his emotions, resulting in
behaviors of concern, particularly in the school environment. The principal has
decided to schedule a meeting with his parents to discuss the present situation as it
has become increasingly difficult for the academic staff.
A) Using the most appropriate model/s of disability, describe Simon’s disability as
presented in the case.
B) Critically discuss at least two (2) possible challenges /Potential barriers
(i) Simon and his family may encounter
(ii) The academic staff at special ed. School.
C) You have been assigned this case. Justify the support you will provide for
