1. Each member first identifies the vulnerable population and community of their choice:
• Clicks on Healthy People –> https://health.gov/healthypeople and click on “Topics and Objectives.”
• Selects a topic of your interest and review the Overview, Objectives, and Interventions & Resources tabs.
• Individual posts to be 250-300 words
i. propose one of the Healthy People objectives to the team. If you are interested in COVID-19, there is no specific Healthy People Objective related to COVID-19. However, check out the “COVID-19 Custom List” to see some applicable Objectives. If you consider mental health related to COVID-19, then you should review “Mental Health and mental Disorders” under “Health Conditions”. Do not choose Health Objectives which the targets have already been met (e.g. children exposed to secondhand smoker, adults meeting aerobic physical activities).
ii. discuss which vulnerable population you want to focus on and which community you want to target. Bring up the significance of the proposed population and community by using statistical data and the assigned reading materials to support your idea. **Each individual must choose a different Healthy People Objective (indicating a specific HPO#), population, and community.** Format your post as shown below:
• Healthy People 2030 Goal: Reduce rates of infectious diseases and improve health for people with chronic infections.
• Healthy People Objective: Reduce ear infections in children-HOSCD-04 (then, discuss the consequences/impacts of ear infection using peer-reviewed articles and epidemiological statistics from reliable resources).
• Target population: Minority parents (then, discuss the significance of the chosen health problem among the population and use national, epidemiological statistics/data to support your decision)
Community: Westminster, CA (then, discuss WHY you choose this community and use local, statistical data to support your decision)
A tip for choosing a Healthy People objective and target group: Remember that you want to be specific as much as you can. For example, if you are using Healthy People Objective to increase the cervical cancer screening rate among women (C-15), your target population would be a vulnerable group of women who have a high incidence of cervical cancer such as Asian women. Then, you will be even more specific to choose a community where your team would implement the health education project. If you want to do cervical cancer prevention among young Asian women, your choices of the community may be Vietnamese women living in Westminster, Asian college women at a CSU campus, or teenage girls at a high school in Long Beach or Cerritos or Westminster, etc.
