2Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly neurodevelopmental disorders found in children (CDC 2023). The Centers for Disease Control and Preventor (CDC) has created a website designed for children or adults with ADHD and their families to find help (CDC 2023). ADHD is described as a disorder that includes attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and failure to control impulses. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has created a webpage directed to parents of children and people who are concerned about their disorder. The webpage provides scientific driven data regarding the disorder and effectively outlines what ADHD is, the signs and symptoms, treatments, data driven statics, causes, diagnoses, and treatment plans available. The webpage clearly provides enough information for people or parents to view and if they feel they display the symptoms that they should get help and how to obtain the assistance needed. The Center of Disease and Prevention has demonstrated the correct rhetorical appeals for ADHD using the principles of logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos can be defined as the appeal to logic, intellect, and reasoning (Grand Canyon University Ed. 2022, p. 71). The CDC presents their website in a manner to persuade their audience towards the current ADHD research that is being done. The CDC reiterates the 3 different types of ADHD that may be found present in children or adults (CDC 2023). Scientists are currently doing extensive research to identify what leads to having ADHD as the causes and risk factors are unknown. They also have many resources available for treatment options that do not start with medication. Methods of treatment include behavior therapy and training for parents of children with ADHD and using medication as a last resort (CDC 2023). The CDC maintains the use of logos by listing concrete facts on ADHD by using creditable sources and
3citing research that has been completed. They have utilized their rhetorical tools to provide statistics, cases studies, and scientific evidence. The Center of Disease and Prevention website demonstrates credible facts and materials on ADHD by using the principle of ethos. Ethos is defined as the appeal to authority and credibility (Grand Canyon University Ed. 2022, p. 71). For more than 70 years The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has used science to help children continue to grow and stay healthy thus being a credible source of information. Their mission is to save lives and protect people from disease which would build trust in the information being provided (CDC 2023). The website provides scientific-medically supported data and statistics that can be reviewed based on actual studies completed. Using references and resources the CDC is able to present the information available in a trustworthy honest manner. Each topic that is outlined has additional information provided to clearly display they have presented proper information that is supported by the medical field. Through citing research and linking to professional organizations they use the appeal to ethos. Throughout the webpage the Center of Disease and Prevention demonstrates the principles of pathos. Pathos uses tone to appeal to the audience’s emotions or passions when attempting to persuade them of his or her point of view (Grand Canyon University Ed. 2022, p. 71). The CDCs emphasis on the signs, symptoms, and effects that ADHD has on children makes the readers more passionate or emotional. Presenting information using children as the subject does get the attention of parents who are searching for answers for their children. While they do present another section for adults it is clear the information is directed at parents and for them to get help in order for our children to grow up happy and healthy. The CDC reiterates why it is
4important to identify this disorder at an early age and get the treatment needed to prevent long term health risks (CDC 2023). The CDC utilizes the appeal to their audience’s interest in their health and emotions properly using the rhetorical appear to pathos.Throughout the Center of Disease and Prevention website they on ADHD they have effectively used the principles of logos, ethos, and pathos. They have displayed a substantial number of facts, statistics, cases studies, and scientific evidence. The CDC is the national public’s health agency of the United States under the Department of Health and Human Services which provides trust and creditability. The website has effectively presented an emotional impact but using children as the forefront of this disorder while linking to parents to have a personal connection. Using the facts, data driven statics, references, and citing professional organizations persuades the readers on the topic of ADHD. The CDC has used rhetorical appeals to create a website that can be trusted and respected by an audience that includes medical professionals to parents of children.
