Betty is a 31 year old Caucasian female. She was referred by her psychiatrist due to her overwhelming
sadness and feelings of despair. Betty had excessive moments of sleeping, and episodes of excessive
sexual acting out with strangers. Her behavior would last for 1-2 weeks at a time. She currently lives
with her husband, George, two sons and three daughters. Betty and her family live in a large
metropolitan area of New Mexico. She is employed as a certified public accountant.
Betty grew up in northern California with her parents, and 3 brothers. Her father, Ben, was the owner of
a successful international tax accounting firm. Although he was successful, Betty’s father had a history
of drinking from the moment he arrived to the office for 25 years. Ben participated in hypnosis and
substance abuse support groups to manage his drinking with little to know success.
Betty’s mother, Melissa, was the office administrator in Ben’s accounting firm. Her mother met Ben in
college and eloped after dating for 18 months. Melissa attempted suicide two times. Her first attempt
was at the age of 21 after the birth of her first child. She would later be hospitalized five times to
manage her depressive episodes. Ben had a chronic history of infidelity and Melissa would find him in
many discrete moments with other women including her office assistant. Melissa filed for divorce two
times, but Ben threatened to fight for custody of the children.
When Betty was seven years old she struggled with difficulties sleeping throughout the night,
bedwetting, and leaving home to attend school. Betty’s parents would spend 3-4 hours a day sitting in
her classroom just to relieve Betty’s distress and fears. The behavior would occur for two years.
Betty’s three older brothers would struggle with their own emotional issues. Her oldest brother Ben, Jr.,
41 years old, had difficulty with maintaining relationships. He lives 10 minutes from his parents, and
works in his father’s firm. He reviews tax returns, but don’t interact with clients. He has intrusive
thoughts counting the foot-steps. When the number of steps are different from his initial number he
becomes erratic and can’t move on until the numbers match up. This behavior occurs throughout Ben
Jr.’s daily routine, severely impacting his ability to function normally. His impairment was the cause of
his divorce of a ten year marriage.
Boris and Braylon, her 37 year old twin brothers, room together in Seattle. Boris works at the local
Costco and Braylon is completing his 7th year as a college senior. Boris and Braylon were in a car
accident at the age of 22 years of age. Braylon was driving the vehicle while texting his girlfriend and
crashed into traffic. When paramedics arrived, Betty’s brothers were both found conscious and in
severe pain. The accident would leave Boris as an amputee, and for five years he would have intense
fears and worries of being trapped in a burning car. After a 3 years Boris would begin to travel by car.
Braylon would later struggle with maintaining relationships due to pervasive distrust and suspicion of
being spied on by former employers and police officers.
At times he doesn’t trust Boris and accuse him of trying to poison him with battery acid. This would lead to Braylon staying locked in his room for days at a time as a means of protection.
