Your first draft, should include the Introduction, Analytical Framework, and Literature Review only.
1) Introduction
Provide a brief overview of the case you have selected and what makes it interesting.
You can pick any case of any environmental issue in any Latin American country.
This should be between 400 to 600 words.
2) Analytical Framework
This should be between 500 and 800 words.
3) Literature Review
This should be between 500 and 800 words.
Analytical Framework:
You will need to establish an analytical framework to analyze your case. In other words, the lenses,
and tools you will use to analyze the case. Be clear in what are the ontological and epistemological
stances of that framework. Up until this point in the course, we have discussed a few analytical
frameworks:
 Path-dependency
 The resource curse
 Eco-sovereignty and Neo-developmentalism
 Eco-socialism and Environmental populism
 Indigenous Perspectives and the Buen Vivir
 Neoliberalism (Mining, Extractivism, and commodities as part of international debt and
trade)
 Elites as governors of natural resources
 Democracies as systems that govern the environment
 Networks and Participatory governance
Discuss what is your analytical framework and why it is useful for the case you have selected. Use
the readings we have done in class thus far and explain why some of these frameworks are
inadequate to understand your case, and why the framework you have selected is most suitable.
Literature Review:
Find at least four academic publications that discuss the case you have selected (check with me if
you have any questions or want to make sure you have selected good options). Discuss in the
literature review how these other publications address, well or poorly, the case you have selected.
Judge how well they analyze the case based on the analytical framework you have chosen
