The Module 3 written assignment is a comparative 1500 word APA research paper on ‘fat in two cultures,’ which blends your reflections on the chapters you selected from Fat in Four Cultures (2021), with four additional scholarly sources chosen from your M2 annotated bibliography (two sources for each culture). Your paper is not just a summary of the book, but an analysis of cultural perceptions of fat. Use short quotes and specific examples, facts, or ideas to highlight, with in-text APA references and page numbers from your sources.
Use one of following prompts to help you focus your paper:
Reflect on the development of a distinctive feature of a non-US culture and explore how this may relate to diets, perceptions of fat, healthful nutrition, or ideas of wellness.
Compare and contrast traditional cultural notions, representations, or views of fat in one of the cultures you selected with how similar issues are portrayed or represented in US mass media or popular culture, in relation to health.
Consider twentieth century demographic changes or technological developments within a non-US culture and how they have impacted diet, nutrition, and population health.
Tips and Formatting
Discussion of the cultures you selected must include in-text APA references (author, year, page number) for all ethnographic details, specific facts, and direct quotes from any sources. Please avoid contractions and dropped quotations, which create a cut-and paste effect. Long quotations should be indented and single spaced.
Paraphrase carefully and correctly. Paraphrased sentences or paragraphs should include proper APA in-text citation at the end of a paragraph. Pages of your document should be numbered and first lines of all paragraphs should be indented. Paraphrases and short quotes are preferable to lengthy quotes, so your writing captures your unique voice.
The paper must be double spaced and the list of references should follow APA style. If in doubt, consult a librarian, Purdue OWL, or one of the ESU writing tutors. Refer to Research, Write and Cite Guide in Course Information.
