In a 1250 or more word rhetorical analysis essay (typed, double spaced), analyze the use and effect of argument (persuasion and rhetorical strategies) in the NRA ad featuring Joe Foss (I have posted a pdf of the ad and titled it “Essay 1 NRA ad”.
(A rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks a work of non-fiction into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect—whether to persuade, entertain or inform–in this case it is to persuade)
Remember to analyze for rhetorical strategies such as appeals–ethos, pathos logos. Also, consider more specific use of appeals– to fear, guilt, history, freedom, family, etc… and how these appeals function to persuade the audience and what they persuade the audience of. Also, note the use of logical fallacies and how they are used to insinuate a logical argument. Sometimes to figure this out, you need to look at what is suggested (or part of the subtext). Think also about the NRA’s intent and the target audience. Pay close attention to how the ad uses diction (specific words) and euphemism in order to persuade the target audience. Note that many of the strategies used in this ad are similar to those used in the NRA ad we looked at earlier in the semester. You may also want to consider how Barthes’ idea of myth is used in the ad to persuade.
