For this writing assignment, you are being asked to write an annotated bibliography of the sources you will use in your history paper on the Harlem Renaissance.
For this assignment, use the Chicago (aka Turabian) style which is the established format for all history writings.
Chicago Style Format:
Each citation is followed by a descriptive and evaluative paragraph — the annotation. The annotations are descriptive and critiques of the sources in relation to each other and to the research project.
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. The annotation exposes the author’s point of view, clarity and appropriateness of expression, and authority.
Write a paragraph or two that describes your research paper’s topic. Be sure to include your ”working” thesis.
Cite the book, article, or document using Chicago style.
Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the item. Also include why the source could be useful in your paper. Each annotation should be around 250 words or more.
Your annotated bibliography should have 5 sources (books, journal articles, primary sources).
The annotation should include most, if not all, of the following elements:
Explanation of the main purpose and scope of the cited work;
Brief description of the work’s format and content;
Theoretical basis and currency of the author’s argument;
Author’s intellectual / academic credentials;
Work’s intended audience;
Value and significance of the work as a contribution to the subject under consideration;
Possible shortcomings or bias in the work;
Any significant special features of the work (e.g., glossary, appendices, particularly good index);
Your own brief impression of the work.
