Include known immediate and extended family members on your genogram. This will include parents, siblings (and their partners if applicable), nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles, cousins (1st cousins only), and grandparents. Note: you must create this genogram on your own (either hand drawn or using one of the Genogram programs listed above); genograms found online are strictly prohibited. Please ensure that your interaction patterns are legible/distinguishable (students are encouraged to provide an ?index? to indicate relationship lines, symbols, etc.

Discussion/Exploration of the Genogram – Explore and discuss the significance of the ?Five Clues? that can be determined through your genogram:

Significant Dates/Events – identify all important dates/events (e.g., historical, familial, and relationship events), discuss what information exists about these events, and what this information adds to your understanding of the patterns in your genogram. Note: if there is no specific ?date? for the event, still note any major occurrences that influenced/impacted the family dynamic (e.g., engagement, major fight, meeting the in-laws, etc.)

Gender Beliefs, Values, & Expectations – discuss how these beliefs/values have threaded through your genogram (or not) and what impact this may have had on the family?s/couple?s development. E.g., how do the couple?s/family?s gender beliefs and values influence their expectations for other members (implicit or explicit)?

Secrets – identify where secrets exist in the make-up of the genogram. If there are no clear secrets, identify where (if anywhere) unknown or unspoken facets of people?s lives exist. Discuss the impact these secrets (or lack thereof) have had on your genogram?s boundaries and communication patterns.

Losses – discuss how the experience(s) of loss (emotional, physical, etc.) has impacted the relationship patterns in your genogram. Explore how these events may have been perceived differently by different individuals.

Themes – identify the themes that run through your genogram that answer the questions ?Who are we?? and ?How do we behave?? What do these themes reveal about your family?s/couple?s belief structure, and how have they guided them in making decisions about their current and future behaviors?

PART B: A Complete Case Study

This will include an overview of the family life cycle, cultural influences, celebrations and rituals, rules and values, and philosophy of life. Note: please bold and/or italicize important components – e.g., themes, rules/values, etc.

Family Life Cycle Stages: How does the family/couple navigate the various lifecycle stages of development (e.g., coupling, arrival of children, etc.)? Do you notice any changes from prior generations (if applicable)?

Cultural Influences: What is your selected couple/family?s identified cultural identity or heritage? (Define what you mean by culture; be sure to consider their various intersecting identities). What is the nature of their current relationships, habits, attitudes, values, and lifestyle that reflect their cultural background?

Celebrations & Rituals: How are special occasions or rituals (e.g., birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc.) celebrated in your selected family/couple? Which are considered most important to them?

Rules & Values: What are some common rules in the family/couple? What overt and covert values are present within the broader family system? Ensure to include a discussion on parenting styles (if applicable).

Philosophy of Life: How does your family/couple ?make meaning? of the world in which they live – i.e., what is the ?motto? that guides their lives? How is this philosophy implemented (or discarded) within their current situation?

PART C: An Intervention Section

As a family or couple counselor, what therapeutic model (and associated interventions) would you recommend to treat or strengthen your selected family/couple? In this last section, you will (a) provide a brief overview of the model and (b) explore those interventions that would be most useful in working with a family/couple like the one you?ve described. These interventions can be directed at treating any deficits noted and/or strengthening positive attributes. For your chosen family/couple, be sure to answer such things as:

What are some of their needs and/or wants?

What are their strengths and/or resources?

Which theory or blend of theories would be most beneficial in working with them (and why)?

What goals would you set if you were to work with them? Specifically, what would first-order change goals (symptom alleviation) and second-order change goals (altering interactional patterns) entail?
