The expectation for the essay is that it will be written in the standard five paragraph format (introduction, three solid body paragraphs that contain facts and analysis, and a conclusion). Although no specific “page length” is required, good essays will generally be around 750 words (three pages double spaced). This essay needs to be typed, properly cited, and use a combination of both historical analysis and historical evidence (facts). You will type your essay in a Word document (or equivalent) and upload it to the Historical Analysis #1 dropbox. It will be run through the plagiarism detector.
The goal of the Historical Analyses is for students to demonstrate what they have learned so far in the course. Students are expected to analyze the assigned material and synthesize that information into a college level response. Since this is a survey course (not a research course) and the goal of the assignment is to demonstrate analysis and synthesis, students should limit themselves to answering the prompt based on the assigned material. No outside information should be included in the Historical Analyses unless specifically approved by the professor.
Please make sure your essay includes the following:
1) Clearly addresses the prompt (including any special notes)
2) Includes references to the textbook (in-text citations required with page numbers)
3) Includes at least one reference to a primary source (from the textbook, the supplements, or the Primary Source Exercise). (This must be cited as well; clearly let me know where the information is coming from.)
***Essays that rely on information from outside the assigned course material without the permission of the professor will earn an automatic zero.*** (In other words, you cannot just “Google” your answers. AI generated essays will generally lack most of the requirements listed above.)
Grading for this assignment will not use a specific analytical rubric, but will rather be graded holistically. This means that there are not specific items you have to hit, but rather the overall nature of your essay must conform to college level expectations (length, formality, citations, historical evidence, and critical thought). The expectation on the Historical Analyses is that the level of analysis will be higher than that presented in the weekly Discussions.
Historical Analysis #1: Prompt
Choose two different cultures/regions that were discussed in the materials for Week One and/or Week Two. Choose three different elements such as religion, politics, social structure, economics, agriculture etc, and compare the two different societies. Please do not forget to include at least one reference to each of the following in your paper: textbook (Ch. 11-14), a primary source (from the Primary Source Exercise, supplements, or textbook)
Things to Consider:
1) You may NOT write a “block” essay where you write one paragraph about one region and one paragraph about another region. You must use a thematic structure for your essay.**
2) By “thematic structure”, I mean that your body paragraphs should focus on a point of comparison, such as religion or politics. Each body paragraph should then discuss both societies and how they were similar or different in terms of that specific point of comparison.
3) The four civilizations that are arguably the easiest to discuss for this essay are: China, South Asia, the Islamic/Ottoman Empires, and Europe/Western Europe. However, there is also good information on the Americas, Africa, Oceania and other regions.(Please keep in mind that you need to choose two regions to compare.)
4) Here are some common points of comparison (thematic elements):
Social Structures (class structure)
*Gender relationships/balance
*Economics (money)
*Religion/spiritual elements
*Political structure
*Agricultural practices
*Environmental interaction
*Arts/creativity
*Military/war
