RCC Psy9 COVID Reflection Project:
For this project I want you to consider how different age groups have been affected differently by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The primary objective is to conduct structured interviews and the secondary objective is to analyze qualitative data.
You will find information about conducting the interviews below. But, your grade is determined by the answers to the essay questions. So, after conducting your interviews, please answer the following questions, primarily considering physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development for each age group. You should also try to include broader implications like economic, educational, health, and personality changes that may take place as a result of the pandemic. It is important to try to find positive answers too and include those in your narratives. Answers should be ~2 pages double spaced per question (~6 pages total; 100 points — questions 1 and 2 are 40 points each and question 3 is 20 points)!
1) Rank the age groups from MOST to LEAST adversely affected and share the rankings. Which age group is being most affected by the pandemic time right now? Which age group is least affected right now? Provide examples from each interview that support your decision and narrative regarding how much each cohort is being affected.
2) When we look back at 2020-2022 in 10-20 years, how do you predict those answers will change? In other words, predict which groups will be most and least affected by the pandemic time in the long run. Provide examples from each age group that support your rankings and narrative regarding how much each cohort will be affected, or how long the effects each cohort is currently experiencing will last.
3) What stood out to you the most by interviewing the people of different age groups? In ~50 years what do you think American children will learn about the Pandemic time regarding how it impacted how people developed in America? (This will require some speculation on your part!)
To keep it as simple as we can, let’s use these age cutoffs, referring to the person’s age between 2020 and 2022:
children (3-14 years old)
teens – young adults (15-25)
adults (26-59)
and older adults (60+)
Interview information:
Aside from infants (who would be really bad at answering these questions), I want you to conduct a brief interview with at least one person from each of these 4 age groups. Please exclude your immediate family or people that you live with unless that is your only way to complete the assignment. Conducting interviews on the phone or via facetime/zoom is perfectly acceptable – so no need to meet someone in person if you prefer to do it remotely. Start by asking them the two following questions (you may have to explain them in slightly different words for the different age groups, but make sure you get answers to them in general), and then you may ask more follow up questions as necessary to get as much information as you’ll need.
How has the pandemic time affected your physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development or well-being? Try to provide examples of each of those three areas of development.
Do you think you are better, worse, or the same in these areas as you were before March, 2020? Do you think this is mostly true for most people in your age category, or is it more unique to you?
If you don’t know anyone in a particular age group, ask your Psy9 Class Group if anyone is willing to offer someone that they have been able to find to interview!
Once you have gathered all of this information, answer the three essay questions listed at the top of this prompt (make sure to give them full responses so you can earn a good grade on the assignment)! You do not need to submit the entire transcriipts from the interviews – just incorporate the essential information into the essay questions!
