The option I chose was case#2- below and book reference-Fundamental Development of Psychology
Discussion Topic: Lab 3: Understanding Suicide and Stigma
Post should be 3-5 paragraphs, and a good rule of thumb for paragraphs is that they be at least 5 sentences in length.
Option A
Purpose: This assignment will increase your awareness of the risk and protective factors involved in suicide. You will apply critical thinking skills to diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities by applying criteria to cases and assessing for risk, as well as evaluating others’ applications and assessments.
Assignment:
Please read the following very brief case descriptions
Case #2: Jacoby just lost his job.
You will elaborate on the brief description, for the case you chose (either 1 or 2), using both the risk and protective factors presented in your book and in the information below:
A risk factor is anything that predicts and is positively correlated with a disorder or behavior, or actually increases a person’s chance of developing the disorder or showing the behavior.
A protective factor is something that is negatively correlated with a disorder or behavior, or actually decreases a person’s chance of developing that disorder or showing the behavior. In these cases, the behavior is attempting/committing suicide. Protective factors serve to cushion the intensity of suicidal ideation and provide “life rafts” for the person who is struggling with suicidal thoughts. In the cases that are high risk for suicide, there may be few to no protective factors and this elevates concern, making the individual “high risk”. In the cases that are lower in risk, there may be one or more protective factors which will help to decrease the suicidality of the person and make a positive outcome more likely (moving on from current life stressor without a disorder).
In each case study given, there is already a trigger that could contribute to suicide, but your job is to find other factors that, given that trigger, might also serve to increase or decrease the chances of suicide.
For example, if we were talking about post-partum depression – risk factors might include family history of mood disorders, personal history of post-partum depression, inadequate insurance, failure to comply with medication due to desire to breast feed, being a single-mother, and/or low socio-economic status. Protective factors might include ongoing psychiatric care, regular post-partum physician’s visits, support from a strong extended family, and/or regular exercise and light therapy.
You will need to create two detailed descriptions of either Kiara or Jacoby and post these on this discussion board:
1) One case will include at least 2 factors that protect the individual and reduce their risk of suicide. Each factor should be clearly described, including how and why it is thought to protect. There must be evidence that these serve to protect in your textbook.
2) The other case should include at least two factors that put the individual at an increased risk of suicide. Each factor should be clearly described, including how and why it is thought to pose a risk. There must be evidence that these serve as risk factors in your textbook.
Risk factors and protective factors are discussed in our book and this section. You can use one outside source, but you do not need to, and that source must be quoted and/or cited appropriately.
Each case should be at least 3-4 paragraphs long. A general rule of thumb is that paragraphs are at least 5 sentences each.
